A Girls Weekend in Melbourne + Botanical Cuisine food porn

My Melbourne weekend in pictures for you all...

It began on Thursday morning with a 430am wake up call and a 6am flight. My older sister and I arrived in Melbourne just after 11am. To an apparent 8 degree morning. Oh but that wasn't the coldest we would experience...

Just landed -- from 28 degrees in Cairns to 8 degrees in Melbourne. Suffice to say, we were cold.

Later that afternoon, mum and our little sister rocked up (literally - at the door, surprising the eldest). We rugged up and headed out to Chapel street as I was super eager to go see Lola Berry do her thang over at the lululemon store. I was psyched I was actually in Melbourne the same time she was doing this, and at one of my fav stores, and with crystals, chocolates, dream catchers and bliss balls, talking all things magical, inspirational, and motivational. Why the hell not wouldn't I go?!?! And I'm grateful my girly crew were happy to roll with.

First night on the town with all the girls

A super blissed out evening; I couldn't have pictured it any better. Like I said; confetti, cacao, almond milk teasers, bliss balls being passed around, smiles bouncing from one to another, and of course all in a hyperdelic colourful space that is lululemon Chapel Street. I was as excited as a kid in a lolly shop just sitting listening to Lola speak. Clearly grinning ear to ear with cuddles and a foodie chit chat afterwards :)

Meeting Lola Berry - absolute superstar - and we had matching thumb holes in our jumpers!

Pana chocolates all 'round (if you have not tried this brand of organic raw chocolates, you're more than missing out girl), and individually wrapped! Oof! Super cute I loved these! And ate them all up! YUM!

Mini Pana chocolates! Perfect handbag size - if they last. SO GOOD!

And we were all gifted a crystal to make a collective wish on just before we left, and thus walked outta that door buzzing!

Crystals, confetti, cacao... All part and parcel of a Lola chit chat

Oh did I mention the sensational lulu gear? We went back to Bourke street to spend almost an hour trying on gear, and all leaving with filled shopping bags to boot! Not having a lulu in Cairns, I'm now determined to get one up here. Who's with me?

A selection of fantabulous pop-colour lululemon gear... The 4 of us all spent a fair bit in there! LOVE

Wallets lighter and I'm ready to rock out with my new purple yoga tights this week.Oh and pink shirt. With my stripey headband.

The following day, after a good veggie burger dinner, a sleep in was fabulous, but we had to make a move to get over to Collingwood by midday to see my good mate Omid Jaffari, founder/creator/chef/genius behind Botanical Cuisine. Having drooled over every morsel of an ingredient put into his creations from writing all the nutritional information about each and every dessert, jam, tapenade, ice cream and more for the website, I finally got to get down and try them all! Now I knew I would be blown away - Omid's stuff never ceases to touch a tastebud I never knew existed, but holy guacamole, this stuff is the sh*t!

Finally caught up with this guy again - Omid Jaffari. Superstar, friend, raw dessert genius.

 Raw vegan cream cheeses...

Melbourne Nights... Olive Pate... Oh my

Mum and Lisa in the tasting room... Complete with head gear

I was ready to start digging my entire hands in these buckets... Rest assured, I did not.

Products ready to walk out the door

Products ready to go in my mouth...
Oh my golly gosh...

Needless to say, lunch was much later that day. We wandered, walked, hopped on and off the famous trams, tried on clothes and shoes, drank coffees and teas, bought little nik-naks, enjoyed an evening in with antipasto, vino rosso and Despicable Me (too funny - def going to see the sequel), some couch time resting, reading and drinking my Mojo, and all had an absolute ball.

Mojo gut = Happy gut... with a spot of light reading one chilly afternoon in on the lounge

Sunday morning consisted of markets down at St Kilda and some delicious Italian panini's before we all had to head back towards the airport for late afternoon flights.

Catching up with my sisters and our mum has to be the best ever. Doing so in Melbourne; even better!

Have you ever done a girls weekend trip somewhere? Where'd you get too? Where will you go next? Share in the comments below - maybe we can get an inspiring bucket list going!

Free Ebook for Summer

So the Raw Xmas Cake orders keep coming on through so thank you. I'll sure have a busy kitchen in a few weeks time! You should see the size of the mixing bowl I bought yesterday especially for it! WOW!

Anyways, tomorrow I'm very much looking forward to a day of juicing, but this time I've decided to do it through an organic juicing company to see what they're like. So I'll have the days worth delivered to my door at work tomorrow morning and shall take it from there! My body is itching for it! And yes only a day this week. Brock and I will be doing a longer stint next week (or the week after) so stay tuned and I'll be sure to keep you all in the loop.

But for now I wanted to give you guys the opportunity to download a free ebook from Botanical Cuisine. It's the Summer 2011 tour and if you remember reading and seeing pics from it here and here, I know you've been hanging out for these recipes!

So download, and enjoy! A few icy cold desserts in there will be winners as Sydney's temperatures continue to climb and Summer is only 2 days away!!! My personal fav; the Chocolate Mousse (which I recently did with mammee sapote in place of mango and oh my god - enough said). Nomnomnomnomnom  :)

Nettle Pop Up Restaurant

Ok a busy week doing assessments for college but I promised you guys a sneak peak into the world of Botanical Cuisine.

Those regular readers will know that I've posted on Botanical Cuisine and an amazing 8-course raw vegan degustation menu before here and here, but those unfamiliar I'll do a quick explanation.

Botanical Cuisine is an simplified approach to life and food that is focused on all things artistic and heirloom, where organic, seasonal produce is enough to please the eyes and the palate. Botanical Cuisine draws its inspiration and ingredients from the wealth of flavours, textures and nutrition found in the plant kingdom to create dishes that are raw, lactose-free, egg-free, gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and adaptable enough to accommodate any allergy.

Botanical Cuisine is the business and creative genius of Omid Jaffari - a great friend of mine he is also brilliant in the kitchen (his Shiitake blog is full or incredible recipes you've gotta try). And what he brings to the table is something very different to what I've seen out there in the raw food world. Typically you've either got beginner basics with smoothies and juices, or the heavy nut-based 'gourmet' raw foods. Now if you're like me, past the smoothie basics and don't tend to eat alot of the gourmet stuff, you're in the kitchen on your own (making a delicious mess, getting creative, having fun nevertheless...)

So, Omid's food is probably somewhere half way between the two but with a huge emphasis on presentation and trying new things (which to be fair can seem a little tricky at first, but once you've tried it once, and nailed it, you can leave confident in showing off your skills at home to impress those closest to you. And let me tell you, they'll definitley be impressed!!)).

So a few weeks back we had Sydney's pop-up restaurant Nettle. I had weeks of organising to do for it but the few days of food prep before - I was happily holidaying here in Queensland. Lucky me! But Friday came and it was all hands on deck. We started early (after my run of course), and packed the car and drove over to Manly to begin setting up; the beautiful Georgia from Stirring Change who I was so eager to meet and instantly clicked with, Omid and I all began finishing food prep, dismantling the furniture then re-designing the furniture the way we wanted it (try hauling antique tables and chairs, carpets, stools, and more all into one room we could shut up and lock!!), organising flowers, table cloths, place settings, glasses, cutlery, candles, menus, cleaning, the order of the evening... then Amelie Kale (yes best last name ever I know) arrived just in time for juice down at Pure Wholefoods when Omid and I decided we needed a break, Georgia's sister also came over to help out and whilst having a shitload of laughs, a few o-oh moments, and last minute showers, we managed to get everything done and looking fabulous just in the nick of time.

And then the guests began arriving. We had about 30 guests in total, and offered nettle tea was a welcome drink whilst overlooking Manly Wharf before we led the guests into the dining room.

MENU

Entree - Semi dried tomato with dehydrated black olive tapenade
Main - Mushroom Bouillon with truffles
Palate Cleanser - Mango and Lime Granita
Dessert - Strawberry Crumble with White Licorice Ice Cream
Melbourne Nights - Layered Hazelnut Fudge, Rosewater Vanilla Butter, & Coffee Caramel dipped in Bitter Orange and Chilli Chocolate

This was the entree - a mouthful of tomato that gently burst when bitten into allowing the sweet juices to pour on to your palate, with touches of chilli, pepper and citrus served warm on a bed of dehydrated black olives and capers...

And then main course - Mushroom Bouillon. Shitake, swiss brown and shimjei mushrooms marinated for hours in a delicious bouillon, served with cauliflower rice and truffle oil...

Plating up the Strawberry Crumbles... cashew and mesquite base, with a warm strawberry citrus jam, lavender flowers -

Served with white licorice ice cream and a dusting of lavender salt. This dish is incredible... and the recipe can be found here

But to top it off (as with Omid's events you'll come to realise that as each dish comes out, it seems to be the new favourite. Better than the last. Better than that one. So hold off until the end)... Melbourne Nights. Can you wait a little for this one? Allow me to indulge in the best foodie vocabulary I can further down when I talk about Melbourne; where this little guy stole the show!

So... Melbourne! We did the same gig, same menu on a Friday night a week later, and yep the manic prep days leading up to was exactly the same, and this time we had 43 guests!! The venue was an amazing artist space in Richmond that we dressed up with tables, chairs, table cloths, an amazing florist's work, mismatched antique cutlery... very Melbourne.

Ooh and yep - that's me!!

So, of course there was the food prep. Tomatoes, tomatoes and more tomatoes...

... to be turned into these beauties again.

Main course was the Mushroom Bouillon, and always a taste-bud favourite.

Melting our specially made bitter orange chilli chocolate whilst restraining ourselves from eating it all straight from the bag...which wasn't completely successful (of course)

And then covering the Melbourne Nights in it...

(done ahead of guest arriving... and taste-tested for good measure).
Then the strawberry crumble's were crumbled from their perfect circles ahead of service...

to be turned into the sweet delicious dessert that they were..

And then of course, the Melbourne Nights.

So to really appreciate this creamy, rich, sweet chocolatey morsel; you first carefully take a small breaking through the crisp bitter orange chilli chocolate coating. There's an amazing coffee taste, and sweet caramel, the chocolate so rich with flavour, then a hint of rosewater...

Layered Hazelnut Fudge, Rosewater Vanilla Butter, & Coffee Caramel dipped in Bitter Orange and Chilli Chocolate

A mild black chai the perfect accompaniment to such a rich dessert that keeps on giving and giving and giving... (note to self only have ONE next time)

So as I mentioned earlier, “Nettle” is the newly anticipated pop up venture, conceived by the Botanical Cuisine Crew. I'm the event organiser for both Sydney and Melbourne so was extremeley happy with how everything turned out, and more importantly how all the guests loved every teeny tiny bit of food they put in their mouths. You know you've done your job well when they walk away deliciously full with taste buds wanting more!!

Anita, Natalia, Omid, Myself and Andrea - the Melbourne team

So the next Nettle is down in Melbourne and looks to be another winner! If you're interested in flying down for it or you're already a Melbourn-ian, have a look here for more details.

Struggling with Raw?

Do you guys remember when I wrote about eating solely cooked foods for a month?
Well I recently wrote about it in length for here if you're interested in reading more.

But if you're a regular reader you'd know I've been back to my usual - raw foods baby - ever since and feeling FAB! This was my brekkie this morn - 3 bananas, frozen pear, coconut flesh, filtered water, barley grass, spirulina and yacon syrup... then coconut, bee pollen, gojis, cacao nibs and acai buckwheat muesli sprinkled ontop for crunchy deliciousness!

Stay tuned for all the manic preparations, running around, food demos, setting tables, florists, staff issues and of course amazing food had at Omid Jaffaris' Botanical Cuisine Tour I organised here in Sydney and down in Melbourne!

A Morning to Chill

So Melbourne - you sure did show me all your glory this weekend just gone. I was blessed with very warm sunny days, the Equinox moon that was ENORMOUS and shone so brightly, new friends made, beautiful faces, amazing food, lots of laughs, literally running through the city, and a host in Omid who made me feel right at home.

It was also the final weekend of Omid Jaffari's Botanical Cuisine Tour. We were busy busy busy right up until the very last minute making sure everything would be perfect and every guest looked after, so once the weekend came to a close we made sure we all put our feet up - with bowls of strawberry sorbet or slices of chocolate ganache ;) I then went for a run around, in and out of and through the Botanical Gardens which really helped me ground myself and clear my head.

But as I am still waiting on some piccies from the crew down south, I've got nothing to show you!! - except the beautiful Miss Lucy Stegley and I, who I am so happy to have met finally.

Other than that, I flew back Monday morning (so early) and headed straight to work in the pouring rain! I'm now on emotional-spiritual-physical-mental R&R for the rest of the week as I haven't had a day off in what will be 3 weeks by this weekend and I've just been going and going and going!
But how blessed am I this morning to have had my shift at work swapped with my amazing boss, meaning I got a sleep in, morning brekkie on the back deck in the sun after my meditation and rebounding, and now have some time to show my blog some LOVE! I am one happy camper :)

Already I'm feeling alot better! All my bus-i-ness has prompted me to think more about my life - what I'm filling it with, my values and beliefs, my time... And I've almost filled an entire new journal mulling over it all! I'll be sure to write more on it all once it's clearer in my head :)

Until then, take it easy. Enjoy this thing we call LIFE. BE IN IT! DO things less, and BE a part of things more.

Sending out gallons of GREEN LOVE and WHITE LIGHT to you all! Happy Wednesday :)

Botanical Confectionary

Salivating much?

Is that not one of the most beautiful desserts you've seen? Wait til you see the rest! This baby is one of many creations from Omid Jaffari - Melbourne Botanical Cuisine chef extraordinaire! And last Sunday was Day 2 of his Sydney tour.

The Botanical Confectionary Workshop - aka dessert day!!
And oh - my - god! If ever a menu has gotten better and better and BETTER with each course served, this was it!

We had a full house again (of course - its desserts!!) with a couple of new faces, and we were all blessed with another spectacularly warm sunny day :)

Tables set, music on, waters poured...

Omid, Maya and I all made sure the day was chilled and relaxing for all our guests so that they could INDULGE a little (well alot) guiltfree... every morsel, every taste, every texture, every flavour, and intriguing combination that was to pass their lips and linger on their taste buds had to be perfect. And so (drumroll please) in order of appearance (and almost order of crowd favourites to be honest), the deathly sins were as follows…

- "Gimme Summer That" Smoothie
- Strawberry Granita
- Salt of the Earth; Chocolate Mousse on Chocolate soil and candied citrus
- Coconut, ginger and lime sorbet
- Green smoothie
- Blueberry flan with lavender syrup and triple-candied citurs
- Panna Cotta with fresh passionfruit and edible flowers
- Lemon granita with sweet cinnamon drizzle

We re-arranged the order of dishes last minute and it worked perfectly! Granitas and sorbets cleansed palates after rich chocolate dishes, and the sweet green smoothie mid way helped to bring everyone back down to Earth after their Heaven highs :)

The presentation Omid has perfected with his dishes is the most beautiful thing to watch for anyone with 'perfectionistic traits'... um, cough cough... ;)
This beauty was the Blueberry flan and it was the number one favourite.

... Until this baby entered the room...

Welcome the Panna Cotta. Close your eyes and imagine this - a creamy yet refreshing-sweet-coconutty-sorbet-like-textured-petite-little-beauty... contrasted so SO well with the TANG of fresh passionfruit. Got it? YUM! This was the winner. Hands down. Said by all.

HOWEVER...

In my opinion - dare I stray from the crowd - the chocolate mousse has to be THE best thing I have EVER tasted in my life! EVER! (lucky for me I’ve had leftovers in my fridge all week)
Soft, smooth, melt in your mouth… A deep rich chocolate flavour, with a hint of dragonfruit peppered throughout ever so subtley … a touch of candied lime gently perched ontop with a pinch of sea salt to finish it off… every little detail thought of and teamed up perfectly. Oh and the chocolate soil underneath - whoah! Holy moley!

Yep that's me alright! Totally blissing out on chocolate mousse.
It was another successful day, full of fun and laughs, wonderful conversations had, questions passed around and bouncing off each other for answers... I love moments like these. Days like these! I was blessed with a whole weekend of it! Like-minded people coming together and HAVING A BALL!

So this weekend I'll be down in MELBOURNE for the final leg of the Botanical Cuisine Tour which is going to be quite the Grand finale and I get to indulge in more of everything I loved so much about last weekend! There will be more chef's in Melbourne, more dishes, more guests, more surprises! I cannot wait! I'll be busy busy making sure everything is ready and everyone knows what they're doing but know we will all pull it off with a BANG! I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes next week sometime. Until then... put those tongues back in your mouth ;)
